Cortina d’Ampezzo: continue on road 51 and arrived in Longarone cross the river Piave, in the direction Codissago, continue to the galleries where you enter in Friuli and then at the Vajont dam.

Vajont is the name of the river that flows through the valley of Erto and Casso to flow into the Piave front of Spar and Castellavazzo, in the province of Belluno (Italy).
The history of the community was shocked by the construction of the Vajont dam, which caused the landslide of Mount Toc in the artificial lake. On the evening of October 9, 1963 it raised a huge wave, which sowed death and desolation everywhere.
The most reliable estimate is, to date, of 1910 victims.
Were committed three fundamental human error that led to the massacre: having built the dam in a valley not suitable from a geological perspective, having raised the share of the artificial lake over the safety margins, not having given the ‘ alarm on the evening of October 9 to activate the mass evacuation of people living in areas at risk of flooding.
It was opened a judicial inquiry. The trial was held in its three phases from 25 November 1968 to 25 March 1971 and ended with the recognition of criminal liability for the previdibilità flood and landslide and for multiple manslaughter.
Now Longarone and the countries affected have been rebuilt.
The area in which the event occurred catastrophic continues to speak to the conscience of those who visit it through the lesson, as timely as ever, that it can be learned.

October 9, 1963

The landslide that fell off at 22:39 from the northern slopes of Mount Toc falling in the reservoir below was gigantic. A compact mass of more than 270 million cubic meters of rock and debris were transported downstream in a moment, accompanied by a huge roar. The whole coast of Toc, almost three kilometers wide, consisting of woods, fields and houses, sank into the basin below, causing a large earthquake. The lake seemed to disappear, and in its place appeared a huge white cloud, a body of water more than 100 meters high dynamic, containing boulders weighing several tons. Austrian power lines, short-circuit, before being uprooted by pylons lit up the whole valley and then left in complete darkness neighboring countries.

The impact force of the landslide mass created two waves. The first, above, was pushed to the east toward the center of the Vajont valley widens at that point. This allowed the wave to lower its level and save for a few meters, the village of Erto. Unfortunately swept away the villages along the lower banks of the lake, which Frasègn, The Thick, Christ, Pineda, Ceva, Prada, Marzana and San Martino.

The second wave poured into the valley beyond the artificial barrier, rising above it up to invest, but without much effect, the lower houses of the village of Casso. The road link running on top of the dam was torn, as well as the building of concrete, two-story, the control panel and the shipyard workers. The wave, with over 50 million cubic meters, climbed over the dam rushing to lead into the valley below with an impressive speed. The narrow gorge of the Vajont compressed further, thus acquiring more power.

At the end of the valley the wave was 70 meters high and produced a more intense wind, which carried with it, in light suspension, a cloud of spray droplets. In a crescendo of sounds and sensations that became certainties terrible, people became aware of what was going to happen, but they could no longer escape. The bed of the Piave was scraped from the wave that hit with unprecedented violence of Longarone. Houses, churches, arcades, hotels, pubs, monuments, statues, squares and streets were submerged in water, which uprooted to the ground. The station did not remain long stretches of rails bent like twigs. When the wave lost its momentum by coming to break against the mountain, he began a slow reflux into the valley: an action no less destructive than dug in the opposite direction to the direction of thrust.

Other villages in the district were destroyed, totally or partially: Rivalta, Pirago, Faè and Villanova in the town of Blyth, in the municipality of Codissago Castellavazzo. A Pirago miraculously remained standing only the bell tower of the church, the villa Malcolm was swept away with its sawmills. The Piave, which has become a huge mass of water silent, returned to its normal flow only after ten hours.

At dawn the nightmare that had haunted for many years the locals, became a reality. The eyes of the survivors were able to contemplate how the unpredictability of nature, combined with human littleness, was able to produce. The loss of almost two thousand victims settled a disastrous record in Italian and world history ……….. had worn a tragedy of the greatest that humanity can ever remember.
